If we suffer. That is, constantly living up to our anxieties and our wounds. If that is how we define our inner person, or personality, our psychological essence. Then happiness or joy does not exist. If we define our personality, our true essence as joy, then suffering does not exist. So both are empty of the other. If we accept the perspective of emptiness, then we are not one or the other, but observe both of them as they come and go. We do nothing with them. We observe them as they come and go both in others and in ourselves. It is simply there for all of us to learn. We observe our reactions to the original content that our experiences give rise to in our states of mind. This also means that emptiness is not emptiness. It is a sense of a whole. Of everything, which contains all of our experience, and a perspective we are born with that we turn back to with all of our previous experiences in it, to observe them but now as adults who see this content both in ourselves and others for what they are. When we also look at the suffering in the world, this is what we see. It gives us a deep sense of liberation. Of peace and an inner stillness that we carry with us all the time and that we can turn to as something not only in ourselves when we need it to feel present, but with both its suffering and its happiness, and to do things with the right intention.
